Generating energy from a river?

I have river in my farm garden.. It is sometimes fast and sometimes slow. I need electricity (for home lamps etc.) How can i find the design and project of electric generation from this river? I need explanation step by step. Bec i am doctor. I am planning to design it by myself. Thank you if you know.

Generating energy from a river?
There are water turbines that can be sunk directly into a river. See links.

1) Map the flow rate. For this, you′ll need a cross section of the channel, and measure the velocity of the flow.

You can determine the velocity by allowing something to float down river and measure the time it takes to cover two points of known distance. This would be your max speed, so, divide by two to obtain an average. Multiply the average velocity by the cross section to obtain the flow.

2) Try to map the cross section along different points.

3) Try to map the flow rate per day and month.

Next, contact a supplier and give him the data and see what they can offer. They will tell you how to install it.

Quite frankly, I agree with the answers 1 %26amp; 3.

Reply:I think you will find that it is not legal for you to generate electricity from a stream.

There is something about the rights to do such a thing being owned by somebody else, it used to be the water authorities, but since privatisation I do not know who these rights have been passed to.

Similar, I suppose to "mineral rights", where, if you found coal underground on your land, you do not have the rights to mine it.
Reply:what does being a doctor have to do with your question? doctor of what? not physics, obviously. Sorry, but if anyone on here gives you advice for free that they would normally charge loads per hour, they are are daft as you!
Reply:These two sites may help you..

fasinating..at least your helping the enviroment.

Please note.. one of these files is pdf format and may take a minute to load..so be patient

Reply:My heart really bleeds for you. You must have such a hard life.

I can't imagine having to seek answers on here in your position and social standing.
