Carmen hired a landscaper to design a small garden at teh side of her house. the garden will measure 2 m by 3 m andn it will contrain a mixture of perennial plants. the landscaper wants to draw a scale diagram of Carmen's garden on a peice of paper that measures 30 cm by 50 cm.
a) determine a suitable scale for the scale diagram so that it will fit on a piece of paper
b) according to the landscaper, five perennial plants can be planted in each sqaure metre (1m squared) of the garden. if each perennial costs $2.50, what will be the total cost of all the perennials needed to fill the garden?

a) the suitable scale will be 1:8 or even1:10
b)total no of plants=2*3*5=30
cost of 30 plants@ $2.50=30*2.50=$75

Reply:a) I think the scale is 1/7. But this is not exact,because if you have to represent 2 mts (200 cm) in 30 cm the scale es almost 1/7, and if you have to represent 3 mts (300 cm) in 50 cm the scale is 1/6. So for that particulare piece of paper 30 cm by 50 cm the safe guess is a 1/7 scale.
b) U$s 15.-. Garden= 2mts x 3mts = 6 square meters. 1 plant each square meter= 6plants. Each plant costs U$s 2.5: 6x2.5= U$s 15
